Sharing the Road: National Traffic Awareness Month

Road safety and GSTV go together like fuel and a car. With our on-the-go video network at fuel retailers, we’re a natural stop for consumers while they are on the road, and a powerful medium to share a well-timed message to impact our national driver audience.

With road-related accidents as an unfortunate reality, it is key to remind pedestrians and drivers of important safety measures. According to NHTSA, 7,522 pedestrians were killed, and more than 67,000 pedestrians were injured across the country in 2022. Every single day in the U.S. about 37 people die in drunk-driving crashes — that's one person every 39 minutes

This August, we recognize National Traffic Awareness Month by highlighting our new partnership with Streets are For Everyone (SAFE) in the hopes of reducing driving fatalities via increased awareness of traffic safety rules.

SAFE is a nonprofit with the mission to improve the quality of life for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers by reducing traffic-caused fatalities. The Streets, Art, SAFE Film Competition is a program created for high schoolers to advocate for street safety through the medium of film. For a month, we’ll be showing winning submissions from the competition throughout the US on our screens. A few of these include:

Speed Kills, Castaic High School, in Castaic, CA (Best PSA Gold 2023)

Little Buddy, Bishop Mora Salesian High School, in Boyle Heights, LA, CA (Best PSA Bronze 2023)

Alcohol Kills Others, Ramona High School, in Riverside, CA (Best Research and Accuracy of Traffic Safety Facts Awards 2024)

On the Curb, Claremont High School, in Claremont, CA (Best PSA Gold 2019)

Damian Kevitt, the Founder of Streets Are For Everyone said, “Through our film competition, students have gained invaluable lessons about road safety and have taken it upon themselves to educate others about what they’ve learned. As one of last year’s winning students aptly put it: ‘It takes a lot of responsibility to drive, and it’s not a joke; it’s not a game.’ We sincerely appreciate GSTV for broadcasting the important messages from these talented high school students about road safety.”

GSTV not only supports driving and traffic-related missions, but we also work with incredible organizations like the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), The NACS Foundation’s 24/7 Day, FEMA, and more. From showing posters of missing children, to sharing PSA’s during natural disasters, we aim to leverage the power of our network for good. Learn more about some of our efforts here
